SERDAR AKAR’S BIOGRAPHY                                                             

 

Serdar Akar is one of the most important Turkish film directors of Turkey. His films have had a major impact, both in terms of the Turkish film industry (Kurtlar Vadisi- Irak) and as the work of an innovative auteur working (Gemide).

 

He was born in 1964. He met cinema at the childhood period by the grandfather’s cinema halls. He graduated in 1985 from Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of Ankara University and graduated in 1994 Cinema and TV Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Faculty.

 

He started to the movies as an assistant director of Mahinur Ergun’s film “Med Cezir Manzaraları”. He shot his first short movie in 1991 and then assisted to the different known Turkish Directors. Between 1994-2018 he directed eighteen TV serials and one TV drama.

 

In 1998, with his first feature movie “Gemide” (On Board) he has been noticed by all movie environments in Turkey. Gemide has an “auteur working” film and with it’s all naturalist aspects it exhibited a marginal world of characters. It has been selected to 52nd Cannes Film Festival’s “Section Parallele” in 1999.

 

His film about the American existence in Iraq “Kurtlar Vadisi –Irak” shoted in 2006 has been watched by 4,9 million ticketed people in Turkey.

 

He continues his efforts in both movies and TV serials with his own production companies (first Filmakar and then Adamfilm) in Istanbul-Turkey.

 

He is still giving lectures in Cinema and TV Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
